Part 93: Episode 4, Day 2, Investigation: Consequences

Oh shit, Maya really is at the detention center.

Wait, if Maya is here, how are we going to talk to Edgeworth? I'm pretty sure half the mystery of this case is due to Edgeworth not talking to us. Which one of the two figures on the boat was he? Was the other person the victim, or the killer?

Hey! Nick, it's you!
Sound: Light Bulb

You know, since it turned out Lotta was making it all up anyway, it kind of seems like Maya was right to have an outburst when she did. Maybe they'll go easy on her.

It's a relief...

Hey.

Why'd you do that, anyway?

...

I don't know.

I know I'm not the lawyer my sister was...

...

I'm sorry.

Well, you did save the trial...

O... Okay.

Music: Maya Fey ~ Turnabout Sisters Theme

I guess it can't be all bad if we're not hearing the elegy here.

Let's fill Maya in on everything that happened by shoving all our evidence in her face.

It must be nice, Nick.

But, spirit mediums, well...

I dunno, with your clothes, I bet at least some people would recognize you...

I wonder if I'll ever be a proper medium...

I look forward to some future game where Maya completes her training and changes outfits.

This picture is the only real new information for Maya.

Uh huh.

Huh...

Well, she totally missed the point.

My... mother.

...

(No... I'm pretty sure it was the wrong thing to do.)

Eh, she'll be fine. But let's talk about something she's more excited about, like Gourdy.

I want to see Gourdy, too!
Sound: Light Bulb

If he really exists.

(Even if there is a monster in that lake, fishing poles sound like a BAD idea...)

Now why would "fishing poles" be highlighted? Are we really going to go fishing for Gourdy later?

Hey, I'm surprised you remembered that!

Karma is the final stage of Edgeworth's transformation from villain to sympathetic character, giving us someone even more smug and dickish to hate.

I'm... not really sure.

That bullet does look pretty smooth, actually.

Yes... the prints from his right hand.

But they must have gotten on there at some time other than the shooting.

What? Really!?
Sound: Light Bulb

(The shooter used his left hand, after all...)

Which... we never told Maya. I guess she has to figure it out from the photo herself.

Everything else gets a generic reaction:

Sorry... I'm fresh out of ideas.

Well, that's all for evidence. Let's chat.

Have you been questioned yet?

No... not yet.

Detective Gumshoe was here just now.

Also seeing as how she saved Edgeworth for him. At least she'll get out of here soon.

Whew...

Bail money? I'm surprised we can even afford food.

You can pay for me, okay?

Huh? How much?

(Why do I picture giant bales of money every time I hear the word "bail"?)

Eh, weak pun.

Any luck with Mia...?

Phoenix this girl just put herself in jail to save your case, maybe ease up on the asking after Mia for a minute?

I tried... I really did!

I don't know what to do...

...

(Hmm... she sounds like she really did do her best.)

(I should check and see if there are any waterfalls in the local area...)

Uh, she's dead, so... Well I guess we have our first task for the day - locate a waterfall?

I guess we just run around a bit and look for clues?

Music: Silence

...

Right...

I have to get Maya out of that detention cell soon!

Nothing new to see at our office, let's visit Grossberg again.

Apparently, Mr. Grossberg is on vacation today.

Guess we won't need anything here today.

Examining the offices reveals mostly the same dialogue, but here...

I feel kind of bad for him...

Back to the office so we can head to the police station and track down Gumshoe.

(Detective Gumshoe's not here...)

Huh? Oh, really?
Sound: Light Bulb

He's a live wire that one.

(Not following protocol...?)
Sound: Realization

(I bet he wouldn't help them build the case against Edgeworth...)

Our friend is back to his usual antics today. Let's see what he's training on now.

That must be one of the detectives.

He's mumbling something to himself.

"...You have every reason to live!"

...

He must be doing image training for talking down a potential suicide.

This guy must've saved all his training for the year for the last week.

The chief is up to something new today, too.

This must be the chief of detectives here.

He's glued to his computer screen.

Checkmate!? I don't believe it!
Sound: Whoops

(He must be playing chess on the computer...)

Well, back to the lake we go, I guess.

I wonder if Detective Gumshoe is here today?

Without Maya around, some of our examination produces different results.

I feel winter's chill from the bare leaf trees today...

It's quite pretty when the cherry trees along the lakeside blossom in spring.

Today... it's just cold.

The sign says "Gourd Lake Nature Park."

This place is full of families picnicking on the weekend.

Nothing at the entrance, let's head in deeper.

Haven't seen Larry around today at all.

:slick:

Still nothing, maybe the boat rental shop will be open today?

(Looks like the boat rental shop is closed today, too.)

Bah, figures.

A small boat rental shop.

Doesn't look like anyone is around.

Are we going to have to wait until the final day to look around here?

There are some boats floating at the dock.

The murder took place in a boat from this dock...

I guess that makes sense, but how are we supposed to investigate it now?

Indeed, there's space for one more boat at the dock.

We better find something at Lotta's campsite because this day is a total bust so far.

Our view auto-slides, and Detective Gumshoe is revealed!

Music: Dick Gumshoe - Detective Gumshoe, Pal

Hey, Detective Gumshoe!
Sound: Light Bulb

Hey, pal!

...

Yes? What about the trial?

Though you did save Mr. Edgeworth, I guess...

We'll ignore the alternate timelines where we fell for the guilt traps.

How about some information?

Er... thanks.

Most of this area has new examine dialogue now that we know a bit more about the place and the person staying here.

I don't think Lotta takes very good care of her SUV.

It's covered with dents.

I wonder why she brought a camping cooker with her?

There's a convenience store right up the street...

That's a good point; why is she camping here at all? To make sure no one makes off with her camera I guess?

The only other item of interest is, of course, the camera setup.

Lotta's camera is staring out at the lake, as usual.

I hope she doesn't leave it out here to get stolen.

Let's play the evidence game with Gumshoe.

You can be proud of yourself when you get Mr. Edgeworth declared innocent, pal!

Our badge is never useful as actual evidence but it's been fun to wave around during investigations this episode.

Claiming she was a witness to a murder and all...

Still, if it weren't for her photograph, Mr. Edgeworth wouldn't have made it today.

Oh, huh, really?
Sound: Light Bulb

(Umm... you were at the trial, weren't you, Detective?)

Maybe he couldn't bear to watch, and left after he was done testifying.

Robert Hammond...

He's the one who got the sole suspect off the hook.

Everyone's free with information about the victim now I guess.

But Edgeworth has admitted he was on the boat.

Damn, Phoenix, don't be telling the police that confidential information.

He seemed fine in court today...

Was the gun firing blanks? Was the victim even on the boat?

Maybe we should be less logical and more supportive here.

Details, pal, details!
Sound: Whack

Whose side are you on, anyway?

(All I'm saying is we have to respect the evidence...)

Sorry to disappoint you, pal.

I'm drawing a blank.

That's his generic "don't care" reaction, if you couldn't tell.

Skipping ahead...

From a meter away... so it would have to have been from someone else on the boat.

Hmm...

What do you make of this, Detective Gumshoe?

Sound: Light Bulb

Er... right.

(Since when do lawyers have to do detectives' work for them!?)
Sound: Whack

We could be like most defense attorneys and just lose every case I guess.

My best guess is he picked up the gun after the other person in the boat fell out.

Huh? How should I know!?

Now, she heard two gunshots, right?

But wait... Look at the Court Record!

I imaigne Phoenix bringing up a floating screen and turning it to show Gumshoe here.

What!? How's that possible!?
Sound: Whack

Where was the third shot fired?

I wonder...

I've been suspicious of the timing of this whole thing from the beginning. I think the killer shot Hammond some time earlier on the 24th, maybe even somewhere not on the lake so Lotta didn't get a picture (maybe even before she was set up), and then the body was dumped out in the lake between then and when Edgeworth showed up. And Lotta's pictures are of the killer firing the murder weapon (with blank bullets) at Edgeworth, then falling back into the lake himself. Or maybe Edgeworth fell back into the water; I don't think that fits what we saw in the prologue, though. It would be nice if he would tell us what actually happened out there, and why he was out on that boat in the first place.

Gumshoe was surprisingly helpful talking over our evidence with us, let's see what else he has to say.

Detective Gumshoe?

Any idea what strategy von Karma is planning for tomorrow?

The original witness, as it were.

Another witness!?

Oh, right, he said something about that in the trial today...
Sound: Realization

Music: Silence

Sound: Realization

Okay, that one line was not really worthy of a flashback.

Music: Dick Gumshoe - Detective Gumshoe, Pal

Er... who was it?

S... sorry, pal.

(Right...)

If this witness is testifying on just the second day of the trial, they probably aren't the killer. So we'll be out to poke holes in their story while prying more helpful information out of them again.

Oh, right... I wanted to ask you something about Edgeworth.

What's up?

Is he afraid of earthquakes? I never heard anything about that before.

...

But there's one thing that's clear as day...

Him hating crime the way he does...

And him becoming a prosecutor...

And him being scared of earthquakes...

Sound: Realization

The DL-6 Incident?

Yep, that's the one.

He still feels the pain now, you can see it in his eyes.

Let's just get what we came here for.

I wanted to talk to you about Maya Fey...

Huh? She's not out on bail yet?

That's strange.

Man...

Seeing her getting dragged out by the bailiff...

I'll be honest with you, pal. I shed a tear or two.

Really!? (Cold-as-ice Edgeworth!?)

Once we've cleared all of Gumshoe's topics, he takes off.

I'm going to head back to the station.

Thank you.

Oh, wait!
Sound: Light Bulb

Umm... I was wondering, how much is bail going to be?

Don't worry about that.

Sound: Realization

What? Edgeworth...?

Didn't I tell you?

He's grateful to her for what she did.

Music: Silence

And he's off.

(Hmm...)

If he's more comfortable expressing appreciation with cash, then we might be in good shape in a couple days!

I made a quick pass everywhere else to see if anything had changed, but there's nothing to do until we go pick up Maya. So we'll go do that next!
